Envy 17 3D and Avatar XXX 3D

Viewing environmentally-aware 3D movies featuring blue aliens, or more relate-able 3D content, just got more portable. HP made a big announcement today with an update on their recently launched Envy 17 laptop: The Envy 17 3D. Arriving this holiday season, and likely coinciding with the release of the Avatar 3D Edition Blu-Ray (finally!), the Envy 17 3D will be the world’s first 1080p stereoscopic 3D laptop. A Blu-Ray drive and 3D active shutter glasses are included to view 3D content displayed on its 17.3″ 1920×1080 LED screen (120 Hz or more). All other specs will be the same as the current Envy 17 including Intel quad core processors and AMD Radeon 5850 graphics.

According to Notebookcheck.net’s 5850 benchmarks, the 5850 barely ekes out 30 frames per second in today’s games such as Starcraft 2, and Modern Warfare 2 at the 1080p resolution, making it highly unlikely you’ll be able to play any of those games in 3D at the laptop’s maximum resolution since, like all stereoscopic games, the graphics processor needs to put out twice the normal framerate. Coupled with the lack of any news from AMD regarding 3D driver support for such games, the Envy 17 3D stereoscopic abilities will likely be limited to playback of 3D video and lower resolution 3D gaming, at least at launch until more powerful processors graphics are offered. However, this is a major coup for AMD to have a well recognized manufacturer make a big push into 3D with a highly-regarded and popular product, using AMD’s graphics processor. This could be the catalyst (no pun intended) for adoption of AMD’s stereoscopic 3D tech over the well established, but limited penetration, 3D Vision from rival Nvidia.

Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but the regular Envy 17 with blu-ray and 1080p screen sells for $1600, making an under-$2000 US price tag likely. This makes it a bargain compared to other 3D laptops such as the Asus G51Jx 3D which retails for $1800, and the Lenovo Y560d at $1600, whose feature sets and build quality pale in comparison to the HP’s.

The idea of a 3D-capable laptop is very appealing, but the currently available machines are not. The Envy 17 looks to finally convince many, including myself, to buy such a machine and it’ll be a great way to view 3D porn like Hustler’s recently wrapped Avatar XXX, discretely because viewing that movie on your 3D home theater setup in the family room, isn’t a convenient option. :)
